Content analysis (sometimes called textual analysis when dealing exclusively with text) is a standard methdology in the social sciences for studying the content of communication. Ear; Babbie defines it as "the study of recorded human communications, such as books, websites, paintings and laws. "Harrold Lasswell formulated the core questions of content analysis: "Who says what, to whom, why, to what extent and with what effect?." And, Ole Holstri (1969) offers a broad definition of content analysis as "any technique for making inferences by objectively and systematically identifying specified characteristics of messages." Here what Dr. Kimberly A. Neuendorf (2002) offers a six-part definition of content analysis: "Content analysis is a summarizing, quantitative analysis of messages that relies on the scientific method (including attention to objectivity-intersubjectivity, a priori design, reliability, validity, generalizability, replicability, and hypothesis testing) and is not limited as to the types of variables that may be measured or the context in which the messages are created or presented."

This year, the 14-year-old takes half his courses via the Web, completing homework on polynomials and Latin abbreviations from his bedroom desk looking out at the gentle slopes of Mount Diablo and a leafy cul-de-sac below.

"I enjoy learning online more," said Ian, "especially since I don't have to lug books everywhere."

The flexibility of Internet classes also suits his globetrotting lifestyle. During a month-long trip to England to visit his grandparents, Ian logged three-system matrices for math class. During frequent jaunts to the family's other home in Mexico, Ian can jump online at a neighbor's house to complete his English essays.

"Wherever I have Internet," Ian said, "I can do online work."

Like many things in modern teenage life, school is going virtual.

An estimated 700,000 students in American public schools take classes
online, according to a March study by Hunter College School of Education
in New York.
